WIELS presents OBSTAKLES<\/em><\/a>, a major survey<\/strong> of Willem Oorebeek\u2019s work. Since the early 1980s Willem Oorebeek (1953, NL) has been a prominent figure <\/strong>with an extensive presence in exhibitions, publications, and as a teacher and a mentor, including for the WIELS residency programme. He developed his practice in the Netherlands before moving to Brussels in 1994, where he has been living and working ever since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past decades, Oorebeek has explored the impact of images <\/strong>and the erosion of the viewing experience<\/strong> caused by the mass inflation of \u2018print\u2019 or \u2018screen\u2019 reproduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De overzichtstentoonstelling bestaat uit ongeveer veertig reeksen kunstwerken, beginnend van de jaren ’80 en ’90 tot nieuw werk dat een ruimtelijke dialoog aangaat met de architectuur. Op twee verdiepingen belicht Oorebeek zijn grondige verkenning van auteurschap en aura door middel van massaproductie van beeld en toe-eigening via reproductie. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In een doorwrocht proces van herhaling en overlapping, in een quasi-schilderkunstige benadering, snijdt hij niet alleen vragen naar representatie aan maar ook die naar de perceptie door de toeschouwer. Net als bij een palimpsest \u2013 de techniek van wegschrapen en overschrijven op een perkamentrol \u2013 zijn de beelden aanwezig in een voortdurende cyclus van uitgewist worden en opnieuw verschijnen, waarbij de oorspronkelijke bron weerbarstig is, ontregelend werkt en nooit volledig onzichtbaar wordt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Centraal in zijn werk staat de menselijke figuur, als werktuig om de politiek van het beeld te onderzoeken, de aantrekkingskracht van iconen en de humor en spot die gepaard gaan met hun oversaturatie in het publieke bewustzijn. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
