During his first year of study, Olev Subbi was also deported to Siberia. The Soviets viewed the inhabitants of the Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania) as a potential threat and wanted to control their populations, partly due to fears of nationalist sentiment and possible German influence.

The deportations were part of a broader policy of oppression and Russification of the Baltic states. The Soviets wanted to marginalize Baltic culture and identity and incorporate the region into the Soviet Union.

Conditions in Siberia were extremely harsh, with hunger, disease, and deprivation a daily reality. In addition to landscapes, nudes, portraits, and group portraits, his later oeuvre also included (semi-)abstract artworks. Many of the paintings are nostalgic and recall Subbi’s childhood summers in the 1930s.

He focused on ways of using color, brushwork, and composition. Early on, Subbi became interested in whether color should depict anything at all and to what extent it could exist independently. It is therefore logical that in the 1980s he turned to abstract painting, where colors existed in various abstract forms.

Popular in the 1960s

His work became enormously popular in the late 1960s, and for the next two decades, he held an important position in Estonian art life.
