25th Anniversary Presentation

Twenty-five years ago this spring, Bruce Silverstein Gallery opened its doors. Since then, we have mounted more than 150 exhibitions, taken part in 75 art fairs, and occupied four homes in New York. Through it all, the mission has not changed: to raise awareness of photography’s history, to connect living artists to that lineage, and to look for where the medium goes next.

The 25th Anniversary Presentation looks back at some of the most memorable of those shows. Assembling it has been its own pleasure — an excuse to sit with them again, and with the artists and the staff who have both challenged and supported me. I am grateful to be part of this community, and above all to the artists and estates who entrusted us with their work and brought all of us at the gallery into their lives.

It is humbling that our own milestone sits inside a far greater one. Two hundred years ago, in Burgundy, Nicéphore Niépce fixed the first image in light from a window of his house. Every photograph in these pages descends from that experiment.

We look forward to the discoveries still ahead.

With gratitude,

Bruce Silverstein
